The world as an instrument

The workshop will aim to be a brief and concise introduction to sound art, using deep listening and field recordings as creative processes in both theoretical and practical ways.

First half-hour: Theoretical introduction, collective listening to a composition based on field recordings, and an initial analysis of how we can propose a working method for the next hour and a half based on this listening.

Second half-hour: Recordings within and around the location where the workshop will be conducted. These recordings will be made individually by the participants with their cell phones. I will divide the group into three smaller groups to use a semi-professional recorder for ten minutes for comparison.

Third half-hour: Organization of the recorded material and an introduction to Audacity, followed by collective listening to some recorded excerpts.

instructor: Thelmo Cristovam

Thelmo Cristovam, Brasília/DF, 1975, lives/works in Olinda/PE. Sound artist, improviser, composer and independent researcher in psychoacoustics. He works in free improvisation through breathing/throat and electromagnetic waves, field recordings, radio art and gives workshops on these subjects.

Tactile Noise

Is it possible to feel sound with your hands? And see sound? The workshop TACTILE NOISE will address sound as a sensory and tactile experience. Using some tools and games, it aims to introduce basic fundamentals of electronics and the possibilities of sound production from a variety of materials and electronic resources.

instructor: BELLACOMSOM

BELLACOMSOM, transdisciplinary artist; producing works ranging from radio art and performative actions to sound installations, videos and objects. Her research traverses the relationship between nature and technology, through the design of antennas and listening itself as a means of conection.

THE GUITAR IS A CREATURE THAT LISTENS: Deep Listening and Improvisation Exercises

The workshop proposes deep listening exercises using the guitar as a means and ally. The guitar, a full and resonant instrument, is often taken as a tool, an object that delivers a specific and closed result. In this workshop, we propose listening to the guitar and listening through the guitar through very simple exercises, with loose strings and minimal notes, paying close attention to intention, materiality of sound along with breathing. The guitar as a shell (listening to the sound from inside the guitar), the guitar as a lake (with the ear close to the guitar body, listening to a note increasingly deeply), the guitar as ground (using the voice to sustain a continuous sound along with the guitar), the guitar as a river (listening to all the sounds within the sound of a string), the guitar as a crowd (with small actions, making the guitar sound like other instruments and sounds), the guitar as an ally, a kind of companion (listening to the guitar, what does it tell you, what new path does it offer you?). In the last part of the workshop, improvisation with the students on the guitar and fiddle.

instructor: Bruno Trchmnn

Bruno Trchmnn lives in Campinas-SP, where he works as a teacher. His practice is guided by improvisation, the intervallic listening of drones, and open and intuitive tuning systems. Has research and theoretical production about experimental music and its political intersections.

Magnetic Spirals: Introductory Workshop to Composition and Experimentation with Tape Loops

The workshop “Magnetic Spirals: Introductory Workshop to Composition and Experimentation with Tape Loops” will cover the basic principles of tape loop technique using cassette tapes. There will be a practical session with exercises focused on the composition and recording of loops made during the workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring their musical instruments to experiment with recording loops. This workshop offers a fun and interesting way to explore analog composition and experimentation techniques. At the end of the process, the sound results will be digitized and sent to the participants.

instructor: Gustavo Infante

Gustavo Infante is a composer and a songwriter who explores tape loops, cassette tapes, analog equipment, and sound processing. He also works in creating soundtracks and dance music. His latest album, “Pássaros” (2021), was released through Selo Bastet (Brazil) and Think! Records (Japan).
